Preview: FC Barcelona vs Athletic Club (game 14 liga 2012/13)

30 Nov

Saturday night is firmly booked for football this weekend with two massive games served up in La Liga. At 8 pm Barça play host to Bilbao´s Athletic Club and the game will be immediately followed at 10 pm by the Madrid-Atlético derby. As Tito Vilanova rightly said earlier this week: ‘if Barça win then any result in the Madrid derby is a good one’. Barça are in a good moment. Messi and Iniesta are both on form which is fitting for Ballon d’Or finalists and both players must strike fear into opposing defenders, while David Villa has been finding the net with his old regularity. With Piqué and Puyol back our defence has looked more solid in recent games while Valdés seems to have got over his early season wobbles. We also have Thiago back to add to the mix going forward.

FC Barcelona 3 Alaves 1 (Barça win 6-1 on aggregate)

29 Nov

Football Club Barcelona cruised into the last sixteen of the Copa del Rey with a 3-1 victory over Alaves at Camp Nou tonight. Alaves took a surprise early lead when Borja Viguera headed in after 16 minutes but Adriano equalized twenty minutes later before David Villa put an end to Alaves’s dream with two second half goals in the space of three minutes to earn Barça a 6-1 aggregate win and a tie against Cordoba in the next roundIt was somewhat disappointing that neither Gerard Deulofeu nor Carles Planas made the starting lineup, both began on the bench along with Cesc Fabregas, Pedro and Oier Olazabal.

FC Barcelona vs Deportivo Alaves – Copa del Rey 2nd leg preview

27 Nov

The Copa del Rey is back tomorrow night with what should be a relatively simple second leg game against Alaves at Camp Nou. Having won 0-3 at Mendizorroza in the first leg Tito Vilanova has the luxury of being able to rest Valdés, Iniesta, Piqué, Busquets, Alba, Xavi and Leo Messi, though he has said that out of respect for Alaves and for the fans the team will be competitive and will treat the game seriously. The sixteen-man squad for the game is made up of the other eleven fit first-team players which includes David Villa, plus Oier Olazabal, Carles Planas, Sergi Roberto, Gerard Deulofeu and Cristian Tello. With so much talk about Messi’s chances of beating Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals in a year, the fact that he has been left out of tomorrow’s game is noteworthy.

There Is No Such Thing As There Is No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect

26 Nov

Gary Huckabay, before he founded Baseball Prospectus, coined the phrase “TINSTAAPP”–there is no such thing as a pitching prospect. I like Huckabay’s work generally speaking, and I like Baseball Prospectus, but how much stock should we put in his idea of pitching prospects?Let’s start with WAR leaders in the draft era. 1965 was the first year of the MLB draft, so I will sort by career fWAR from 1966 to the present, with a note of when the player was selected in the draft.Roger Clemens 145.5 (1st round)Greg Maddux 120.6 (2nd round)Randy Johnson 114.7 (2nd round)Bert Blyleven 110.0 (3rd round)Nolan Ryan 108.9 (12th round)

Levante 0 FC Barcelona 4

26 Nov

Barça’s spectacular start to La Liga continued with an excellent 0-4 victory over Levante at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium tonight. After an evenly-balanced first half Barça scored all four goals in a stunning twenty minute spell at the start of the second half. Leo Messi added another brace to take him within three goals of Gerd Muller’s record of 85 goals in a calendar year, but the real star today was the brilliant Andres Iniesta who set up Messi for his two goals before firing in Barça’s third and then sending in Cesc Fabregas for the fourth. With Victor Valdés recovered from a slight knock Tito Vilanova was able to put out ten starters who have passed through La Masia plus Dani Alves. However, an early injury to the Brazilian saw him subbed off for Martin Montoya which meant for over an hour the team was made up solely of Masia boys.

Barça hope to extend the record-breaking start to the league season with a trip to Valencia to play Levante tomorrow evening (Sunday 9pm local time). The Ciutat de Valencia stadium has provided a happy hunting ground for Barça in recent seasons though Levante’s impressive start to the season has seen them move to fourth place in La Liga which suggests tomorrow’s game will be far from easy.Twice in recent years, in 2005 and 2011, we have celebrated winning La Liga at Levante. In 2005 a goal from Samuel Eto’o earned us a 1-1 draw which was enough to win Frank Rijkaard’s team their first Liga, while it was a spectacular diving header from Seydou Keita that won the clinching point in our 2011 campaign

Dining in the Dark?

22 Nov

What is it like to dine in the dark? That’s what we found out at dans le noir in NYC.

I have to say I’ve never experienced anything like it. Total and complete darkness, I can’t remember ever experiencing total darkness. Even at night there is some light from the moon and stars, from street lights and homes, you are never truly in pitch black darkness. But at dans le noir, you get to experience what it’s like in true darkness, where you have your eyes open but see not even a shimmer of light. I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the servers. Of course they are blind and used to it, but after experiencing the clumsiness of having to use my other senses, I was truly impressed.
