Should Ryan Braun pass on being MVP?

20 Jan

If you are listening to David Brown over at Yapoo! sports, Ryan Braun should decline acceptance of the 2011 MVP award to salvage his reputation. As most baseball fans are well aware of, Braun had a dirty drug test last fall which should trigger a 50 game suspension effective immediately when the 2012 season kicks off. What a lot of people have overlooked is that Braun was not caught with steroids in his system, but rather a synthetic testosterone he claims was for a medical condition.

Braun may be clean having only used a prescribed medication. The test could be faulty as Braun claims it is. The problem is that there is no prescription on record for Braun. Not for a synthetic testosterone or the real stuff. The test could be faulty – but why is it only seemingly faulty when someone pops a dirty test? The odds the test is dirty are almost negligible. Possible – yes. Likely – not even close.

Should Braun then decline his MVP to salvage his reputation? No freakin’ way. When I read the article in which David brown suggested that I had to check to see if it was another piece of crap from that contributor network they use to fill holes when they need something cheap on slow news days. No luck. Supposedly, this guy is a real writer – I won’t go so far as say journalist. How anyone can think Braun giving up his MVP is a good idea – or that he would consider it for “PR” reasons is nuts.

I personally think Braun juiced. That doesn’t matter. What does matter is that testing says he used a substance to enhance his performance. David Brown would have us think that it doesn’t matter. Performance enhancers don’t actually enhance performance according to Brown. It seems illogical given that they must do something for so many athletes to risk so much to use them. I mean, was Brady Anderson even projected as a marginal power hitter, much less 50 HR hitting lead off guy prior to his steroid use? Are we to believe that Sosa, Bonds, McGwire, Palmeiro, et al. hit their power stride in a historic fashion when nearly every other player is declining at a similar age – and then just for giggles they all just happen to defy hostroy and logic at the same time? Seriously?

Listen – we cast MVP votes for the likes of Bonds, Sosa, McGwire, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Palmeiro, Canseco and Caminiti full well knowing those guys were jacked up. No one complained. Of those that won the MVP, they kept their award. No one told them to decline it. Roger Clemens didn’t turn in his CY Youngs or decline one even though the dude was obviously hitting the D-Bol. We all pretended it didn’t matter until we needed someone to report on to keep the winter news hot and or congressmen busy. Then, we vilified them.

I don’t like that Braun cheated – allegedly. Had anyone known in advance of MVP voting, maybe Matt Kemp would have won. But that didn’t happen and Braun did win the vote. Give him his award, let him enjoy the moment, and then move on to suspending him for 50 games. There is no point in crying over it or bitching about it now. Just move on.
